The Coffee Press: A Little History

If you desire rich full flavored coffee then a coffee press, or French press, is a must-have. Coffee presses are an inexpensive alternative to making coffee. The process is simple, quick and easy. What most coffee drinkers don’t realize is that you can get a fairly clean brew of coffee if you have the right tools and preparation.

What is a coffee press? It is a narrow cylindrical device that is made of either glass or plastic. It includes a lid and has a fitted plunger inside the cylinder that features a filter made of wire or nylon mesh. You brew the coffee by combining coffee and hot water and allowing them to set for a few minutes. By pushing the plunger down the coffee is separated at the bottom of the cylinder.

The coffee press was invented by accident in the mid 1800s by a Frenchman. One morning he forgot to add coffee to his water as he was boiling it. He didn’t want to start over or waste the water so he placed ground coffee in a jar and poured the boiling water over it. As the coffee brewed, it floated to the top. To solve this dilemma he found a piece of screen and used it to press the coffee grounds to the bottom of the jar. When he tasted the coffee he found that is was much better than his usual routine of boiling the coffee and water together. Thus the French Coffee Press Pot was created.

If you haven’t already tried a coffee press, I suggest you go get one. They yield a wonderful pot of coffee that reflects coffee’s true taste, bold flavor and aroma. Over 2.5 million coffee press pots are sold each year in the U.S. so what are you waiting for?
